Secondary Containment Monitoring (SCM)

Vacuum monitoring of double-wall pipework, tanks and sumps through the submersible pump

Franklin TS-SCCM secondary containment control module

Overview

Franklin's secondary containment monitoring (SCM) turns the submersible turbine pump into a vacuum source for the interstitial spaces of double-wall pipe, tanks and sumps. The pump's siphon port draws a vacuum of -2 to -6 inHg on each space, and a TS-SCCM control module watches how well that vacuum holds. If it cannot be maintained, or liquid reaches the space, the tank gauge raises an alarm and can shut the pump down.

Each pump can serve up to four interstitial spaces, using single-channel (TS-SCCM/1) or dual-channel (TS-SCCM/2) control modules and extra siphon ports. Franklin also lists 220 VAC versions (VS-SCCM/1 and VS-SCCM/2). During commissioning a calibrated leak from the TS-SCMCAL kit is introduced and AUTO-LEARN® records the vacuum flow rate of each space through a calibrated orifice, so the system knows what a tight containment looks like.

SCM is a software option on the EVO™ 550, EVO™ 5000, EVO™ 600 and EVO™ 6000. The console needs TS-420IB, TS-RLY and TS-ACI modules plus the TS-SCM software, and the monitored containments must terminate inside the pump containment sump. It works with FE PETRO® and Red Jacket® pumps, and the installer must check each containment's vacuum limit with its maker first.

Apex supplies, installs and services SCM systems in Lebanon, from vacuum hose runs to AUTO-LEARN® commissioning.

Questions

Secondary Containment Monitoring (SCM): common questions

Which tank gauges support SCM?
SCM is a software option on the EVO™ 550, EVO™ 5000, EVO™ 600 and EVO™ 6000. It is not offered on the EVO™ 400 or EVO™ ONE.
Does SCM need a separate vacuum pump?
No. It uses the siphon port of the existing submersible turbine pump to draw and hold vacuum on the interstitial spaces.
How many spaces can one pump monitor?
Up to four, using a combination of single and dual channel TS-SCCM modules and secondary siphon ports.
