FE PETRO MLD+ mechanical leak detector by Franklin Fueling Systems

Overview

A mechanical line leak detector sits in the leak detector port of the submersible pump and checks the pressurised line each time the pump starts. FE PETRO MLD+ units detect leaks equal to 3 gph at 10 psi (11.4 lph at 0.70 bar). If a leak is present, the detector restricts delivery to under 3 gpm (11.4 lpm) and takes more than 4 seconds to open, a slow flow at the nozzle that warns the operator. With no leak, it opens fully and stays open at discharge pressures as low as 1 psi (0.07 bar), then resets when line pressure falls below 3 psi (0.21 bar) with the pump off.

Four colour-coded models match the fuel: MLD+G (blue cover, copper vent tube) for gasoline with up to 10% ethanol, MLD+D (gold, copper) for diesel with up to 5% biodiesel, MLD+AG (blue, stainless) for up to 85% ethanol and MLD+BD (gold, stainless) for diesel with up to 20% or 100% biodiesel. A low-volume piston and a metering pin unique to the MLD+ give precise detection on flexible, rigid or mixed pipework. They fit the 2" NPT port of FE PETRO and competitive 4" pumps, are cULus listed and are third-party certified to US EPA 280.41(b) and 280.44(a).

For 6" pumps, the MLD-HC (gasoline) and MLD-HCD (diesel) mount in an adapter tee in the same sump as the pump. The piston travels a full 41.3 mm to move the poppet clear of the flow path, a 94.2 cc cylinder limits nuisance trips from cold-weather contraction, and O-ring thread seals make removal easy in a tight sump. Apex supplies, installs and tests MLD detectors.

Questions

FE PETRO® MLD+ and MLD-HC Mechanical Leak Detectors: common questions

What leak size does the MLD+ detect?
Line leaks equivalent to 3 gph at 10 psi (11.4 lph at 0.70 bar), when installed with the appropriate fuel model.
How does the operator know a leak was found?
The detector restricts product delivery to less than 3 gpm (11.4 lpm) and takes more than 4 seconds to open, so dispensing becomes noticeably slow.
Which model is used for diesel?
The gold-cover MLD+D for diesel with up to 5% biodiesel, or the MLD+BD for blends up to 20% or 100% biodiesel.
