Franklin Fueling Systems Guardian Series single-phase fixed speed pump controller

Overview

Guardian Series fixed speed controllers replace the basic relay control box of a fixed speed submersible pump with a smart unit that protects the pump and reports what went wrong. The single-phase SPGC-220 handles FE PETRO pumps of ⅓, ¾, 1½ and 2 Hp and comparable competitive pumps, one controller per pump. The three-phase TPGC-380 (380 VAC, 50 Hz) and TPGC-220 (208-240 VAC, 60 Hz) are rated 5 Hp and drive most three-phase FE PETRO 3 and 5 Hp pumps and similar competitive pumps, except 460 and 575 VAC models.

Set-up takes one press of the Calibrate button: the controller learns the electrical characteristics of the pump, which makes retrofits straightforward. In service it watches for underload (dry running), low and high incoming voltage, overload at start-up and while running, open circuits, extended run and relay failure. Each fault shows as a code on the 3½-digit display, with an audible alarm and a separate silence button. The last five abnormal conditions are kept in non-volatile memory, which helps track down intermittent problems.

Primary/secondary and alternating operation are supported for manifolded pumps, and an RS485 port connects the controller to EVO Series consoles through the Turbine Pump Interface. The SPGC-220 measures 215 x 127 x 76 mm and the three-phase unit 230 x 196 x 140 mm; both are ULc listed and CE certified, and are installed indoors in a non-hazardous area. Apex supplies, installs and services Guardian controllers with FE PETRO pumps.

Questions

Guardian Series™ Fixed Speed Pump Controllers: common questions

Which Guardian controller do I need?
Use the SPGC-220 for single-phase pumps up to 2 Hp. For three-phase 3 or 5 Hp pumps on a 50 Hz 380 V supply, use the TPGC-380.
How is the controller set up?
Press Calibrate once and the controller automatically learns the electrical characteristics of the pump.
Can it be used with non-Franklin pumps?
Yes. Franklin lists compatibility with comparable competitive pumps, except 460 VAC and 575 VAC models for the three-phase unit.
