EBW® Vapor Shear Valves
Breakaway protection for Stage II vapour recovery risers

Overview
Where dispensers return vapour to the tank through a Stage II recovery line, that line needs its own emergency breakaway point just like the product line. The EBW® vapor shear valve fills this role. It is installed under the dispenser on the vapour riser, and if the dispenser is displaced by a vehicle the valve separates at its shear point instead of tearing the buried vapour piping.
The design uses two spring-loaded poppets. One closes toward the dispenser riser and the other closes toward the vapour pipe running back to the tanks, so vapour is contained on both sides of the break. This matters on sites that are judged on emissions as well as on spills, since an open vapour line can vent the tank ullage straight to the forecourt.
Installers get a 1" test port and two 3/8" test ports built into the body, which removes the need for extra tees in the vapour line and cuts the number of joints that could leak later. The base has a 1½" female thread, and both U-bolt and boss mounting are standard. The body is zinc plated against corrosion. When the valve is used without Franklin stabilizer bars, Franklin specifies a separate fastener kit with hex-head bolts. Apex supplies the valve with the matching mounting hardware for vapour recovery dispensers installed in Lebanon.

Questions
EBW® Vapor Shear Valves: common questions
- Why does a vapour line need its own shear valve?
- If a dispenser is knocked over, an unprotected vapour riser can break below grade and vent tank vapour. The vapor shear valve gives a controlled break point and seals both sides.
- Do I need extra test tees in the vapour line?
- No. The valve body already carries one 1" and two 3/8" test ports.
- What hardware is needed without Franklin stabilizer bars?
- Franklin specifies its Vapor Shear Fastener Kit, which supplies hex-head bolts, whenever the valve is used with non-Franklin stabilizer bars.
