Franklin UPP 50 mm primary electrofusion pipe

Overview

UPP® primary pipe is the single-wall line of Franklin's electrofusion system, approved to EN 14125:2013 with a Class T1 temperature rating of -40° C to 50° C. The PE100 wall carries a clear EVOH resin liner as a vapour and hydrocarbon barrier, and the pipe is black with two clusters of four green stripes, so it is easy to tell apart from secondary pipe on site. Primary pipe is rated to 10 bar (145 psi) working pressure, with a typical burst pressure of 40 bar, and to a vacuum of -0.9 bar. That covers pressure and suction lines alike.

Five diameters, 50, 63, 90, 110 and 160 mm, let each line be sized to its flow, and there is also a dedicated 110 mm FILL pipe rated to 6 bar for fill lines. Each size has its own couplers, plain and electrofusion elbows, tees, reducers, end caps, flanged stubs and threaded terminations in BSPT, NPT and stainless steel.

Franklin's datasheet gives practical laying rules. Bury the pipe at least 300 mm (12") deep on a 150 mm bed of backfill, slope trenches back to the tanks at 1:100, and lay runs longer than 12 m in gentle snake-like curves. Coils bend tighter than welded sticks: in warm weather a 63 mm coil can bend to 1 m, while welded 63 mm sticks need 2 m.

Apex supplies and installs UPP® primary pipework in Lebanon, with electrofusion welding by trained installers.

Questions

UPP® Primary Pipe (50 to 160 mm): common questions

Which UPP® primary sizes are available?
The EN range covers 50, 63, 90, 110 and 160 mm primary pipe, plus a 110 mm FILL pipe for fill lines. Sticks and coil lengths vary by size, as shown in the table.
How deep should UPP® pipe be buried?
Franklin recommends a minimum burial depth of 300 mm (12"), on a bed of about 150 mm (6") of backfill, with trenches sloping back to the tanks at 1:100.
Does the installer set the welding parameters?
No. The UPP® welding unit works out the weld settings for the fitting, whatever the diameter or temperature, and the installer just presses one button.
